From Artificial Life to Artificial Embodiment: Using human-computer interfaces to investigate the embodied mind 'as-it-could-be' from the first-person perspective

چکیده
There is a growing community of cognitive scientists who are interested in developing a systematic understanding of the experiential or ‘lived’ aspects of the mind. We argue that this shift from cognitive science to consciousness science presents a novel challenge to the fields of AI, robotics and related synthetic approaches. AI has traditionally formed the central foundation of cognitive science, and progress in artificial life has helped to pioneer a new understanding of cognition as embodied, situated and dynamical. However, in the current experiential turn toward the phenomenological aspects of mind, the role of these fields still remains uncertain. We propose that one way of dealing with the challenge of phenomenology is to make use of artificial life principles in the design of systems that include human observers inside the technologically mediated sensorimotor loops. Humancomputer interfaces enable us to artificially vary the embodiment of the participants, and can therefore be used as novel tools to systematically investigate the embodied mind ‘as-it-could-be’ from the first-person perspective. We illustrate this methodology of artificial embodiment by drawing on our research in sensory substitution, virtual reality, and interactive installation.

Bayesian perspective over time
Thomas Bayes, the founder of Bayesian vision, entered the University of Edinburgh in 1719 to study logic and theology. Returning in 1722, he worked with his father in a small church. He also was a mathematician and in 1740 he made a novel discovery which he never published, but his friend Richard Price found it in his notes after his death in 1761, reedited it and published it. But until L...

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the development of computer systems that are able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wide-ranging tool that enables people to rethink how we integrate information, analyze data, and use the resulting insights to improve decision making—and already it is transforming every walk of life. AI has application...
متن کاملThe centrifugal development of artificial agents: a research agenda
This paper presents a research agenda underlying a PhD proposal on embodied software agents. The research aims to demonstrate that it is possible, for embodied software agents, to develop first-person meanings for environmental perturbations. According to the proposed approach, first-person meanings will be created through the agent centrifugal development. We argue that centrifugally developed...
متن کاملThe Bodily Formats Approach to Embodied Cognition
Chapter Overview In the past few decades, many practitioners of cognitive science and philosophy of mind have staked out programs and positions under the label of " embodied cognition " (EC). They have widely differing views, however, of what embodiment consists in and why a program of embodied cognition might be an improvement over classical cognitivism. Frederique de Vignemont and I have rece...
